Karl Lagerfeld once said: ‘Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants.’

But happy days!  Our favourite lazy gear now officially has fashion’s seal of approval.  On SS16 catwalks models showed off retro 1990s-style tracksuits and even Victoria Beckham stole some of Sporty Spice’s looks for her own summer collection.

And there is no denying that sportswear is having a bit of a moment of late. Crop tops, caps and trainers are back bigger than before, no longer reserved for the park and a bottle of bucky.

But before you get excited and think wearing joggers to the office means another 10 minutes in bed, think again. Think more chic less chav. Looking stylish not slobby is the look your going for –match your trousers with slick tailored tops and polished accessories.

Still worried they're not polished enough? You can always follow Team Kanye and declare the leather sweatpants your fashion must have. Personally they have the same appeal as running in bin bags but each to they're own. But if you have legs like Giselle and a bum like Beyonce, KNOCK YOURSELF OUT.

I eventually caved and bought mine from Topshop (not leather, but navy with a silk stripe down the side). So far I've worn them to the office, to the airport and to eat my body weight on the sofa while watching the Bridge. My boyfriend is obsessed with them, 'They just look really comfy and sexy,' he explained. 'Do they do a men's version?'

I wonder what Kaiser Karl would have to say about that...
